The kilo price of the metal, the hours of work and the tinning. Why two pieces that look alike carry different prices, and why wholesale comes out lower.

What makes one copper piece cost more than another

Why does one copper coffee pot cost twice what another does, and why do two trays of the same diameter sit at different prices? The answer comes down to three lines: the kilo price of the copper itself, the labour that turns it into a shape, and the tin drawn over any surface that touches food. The figure on the label is those three added up.

Copper is a traded metal

Copper has a daily price on the world market. What a workshop pays per kilo of sheet this month is not what it paid three months ago. That is why the same product moves up or down over time. When the sheet changes, the piece changes with it.

Weight is the biggest single line

Copper is bought by the kilo, so the weight of a piece is cost in the most direct sense. A flat tray of 30 cm comes in around 450 grams in 0.7 mm sheet, and 650 to 700 grams in 1 mm. Those 250 grams are paid for before a single hour of work is added. In a photograph the two look identical; the scale is what tells them apart.

Labour is counted in hours

A sheet pressed into a die is done in minutes, and a press turns out hundreds of pieces a day. Hand raising puts the same piece in front of one man for hours: hammering the base of a large cauldron takes half a day. If engraved decoration is wanted on top of that, the engraver spends days on a single object. Setting the price of a pressed tray next to an engraved one is not comparing the same work.

Tin is its own cost

Any inner surface that meets food is tinned. Tin is a separate metal to buy, and drawing it over a heated body with cotton wool is a separate trade. An untinned piece naturally sells for less, but it does not belong in a kitchen; it stays decorative. Where two prices differ sharply, the lower one is often the untinned one.

Plated against solid copper

Most of what is sold as copper at very low prices is copper plated. The body is another metal with a few microns of copper laid over it, thinner than a sheet of paper. The reason it is cheap is simple: there is almost no copper in it. Plating peels in time and cannot be repaired. In solid copper the whole body is copper; a worn surface is polished back, and when the tin wears through the piece is tinned again.

What separates two pieces that look alike

  • Wall thickness: between 0.7 mm and 1.2 mm the material almost doubles.
  • Tinning: a tinned interior adds both metal and hours.
  • Hammered or pressed: one is the work of hours, the other of minutes.
  • How the handle is fixed: a riveted handle is drilled and set one by one, a soldered one opens up under load.

Why wholesale comes out lower

On an order of fifty the die is set once, the tin bath is heated once, and the same motion is repeated fifty times. The share of that preparation carried by each piece shrinks as the count rises. Material cost stays where it is; what falls is the labour per unit. That is why a wholesale price sits below retail, not because the quality drops.

How to compare

Take two pieces of the same diameter and the same form, then look at their weights. The density of copper is fixed, so the heavier one is the thicker one. If the description gives no grams, ask for them. On the cheap side four things usually travel together: thin sheet, an untinned surface, a soldered handle and a plated body. Set those aside and the remaining gap is often smaller than it looked.
